Dick Birks is Consultant Anaesthetist to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust. He has been on Council since 1997. He was Honorary Treasurer of the AAGBI (2002 - 2006) and Vice President 2006-2007. His interests include Obstetric and Upper GI Anaesthesia. A former Honorary Secretary to the Obstetric Anaesthetists Association he is currently a Primary FRCA examiner.

Dr Iain Wilson is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Joint Medical Director, at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. He is Chairman of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists Publications Committee and an editor of the Oxford Handbook of Anaesthesia. His interests include anaesthesia in resource poor environments.

Ian Johnston is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness with specialist interests in obstetric and regional anaesthesia. Prior to election to Council of the AAGBI in 2002 he served on the committee of the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists and, following devolution, was elected to the first Scottish Standing Committee of the AAGBI.

Dr Les Gemmell is a consultant anaesthetist/intensivist in the North East Wales Trust. He qualified from St. Mary’s Hospital London in 1974 and trained in Torbay, Sheffield, Leeds, Cardiff and Natal University. His clinical interests are critical care, outreach services and major upper GI surgery. He is currently Honorary Secretary Elect and Chair of Safety of the AAGBI. He is Clinical Director of Surgery, Anaesthetics, Theatres and Critical Care and Associate Medical Director in charge of Risk Management and Safety at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. He is a Council Member of Age Anaesthesia and associate editor of the BJA’S Continuing Education in Anaesthesia, Critical Care & Pain. His work at the AAGBI has included membership of 6 Working Parties and is currently chair of the DNAR in the Perioperative Period Working Party. His outside interests include rugby, golf and cooking.

Dr Andrew Hartle

Dr Hartle is a Consultant Anaesthetist & Intensivist at St Mary’s Hospital, London, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He qualified in 1987 from the University of Leeds and trained in the RAF, London and Duke University, North Carolina, USA. His clinical interests are obstetric and ENT anaesthesia and Critical Care. He has been Clinical Director of the Department of Anaesthesia and Chairman of the Clinical Ethics Committee. Elected to AAGBI Council in 2006, he is still the youngest non-trainee member of Council. He has chaired the Joint Informatics and Safety Committees. He lectures, writes and broadcasts on issues related to Clinical Ethics.

Dr Ellen O'Sullivan

Dr Ellen O’Sullivan is currently a Consultant Anaesthetist at St James’s Hospital, Dublin, where she was Clinical Director from 2000-2003. She trained in anaesthesia in the UK and spent 10 years as a Consultant and Lecturer at the University Hospital Aintree, Merseyside. Her clinical/ research interests include Airway Management, ophthalmic regional anaesthesia, and Total Intravenous anaesthesia.
She is an elected council member of the College of Anaesthetists, RCSI, and is presently Chairman of the Examination Committee. Dr O’Sullivan has recently been appointed as Secretary of the Anaesthesiology board of the UEMS (union of European Medical Specialists).
Dr O’Sullivan was elected council member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) from 2001 to 2005 and again in 2007, and chaired the International Relations Committee of the AAGBI for three years. She has recently completed a four year term as Convenor of the Irish Standing Committee of the AAGBI.
She is presently co-ordinator of the Overseas Anaesthesia Fund (OAF) and involved in the Global Oximetry project.

Editor in Chief Anaesthesia
Dr Steve Yentis

Dr Yentis is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London. He qualified in 1984 from UCH and trained in London and Toronto. His clinical interests are obstetric anaesthesia and airway management, while other interests include research methods and medical ethics. He is an elected member of the Council of the Association of Anaesthetists and an Editor of Anaesthesia. He regularly lectures and teaches in the UK and abroad and has written extensively on various topics including two successful textbooks and a book of medical cartoons. His work at the AAGBI has included membership of the Consent Working Party. His non-medical interests include membership of a folk band and a barbershop quartet.

Vice Presidents
Will Harrop-Griffiths is a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. Before taking up his post as Vice President, he was Immediate Past Honorary Secretary. His interests include obstetric anaesthesia, vascular anaesthesia, horse-riding and not falling off his motorbike. His passions include regional anaesthesia, his family and English grammar.
David Bogod is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham City Hospital with a special interest in obstetric practice. He is the previous Editor-in-Chief of Anaesthesia, the official journal of the Association of Anaesthetists, and was the Chair of the Obstetric Sub-Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiology. His other interests include medico legal matters, consent issues and the ethics of research and clinical practice.
Prof Sneyd is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and Vice Dean of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. He qualified in 1981 from Cambridge University and St Thomas’ Hospital London and trained in London, Manchester and the USA. He is currently closely involved in the management and leadership of the Medical and Dental Schools. He is an elected member the Council of the European Society of Anaesthesiologists and recently completed 10 years as an examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He recently acted as External Examiner for the University of the West Indies, Exchange Examiner for the College of Anaesthetists in Ireland as well as advising the Irish Medical Council on medical schools.
He has written extensively on intravenous anaesthesia and is conducting a programme of research on new anaesthetic drugs. His work at the AAGBI has included Chairmanship of the Events Committee which drives the AAGBI educational programme. His non-medical interests include sailing and orienteering.
