Blood Conservation in Cardiac Surgery Seminar
Wednesday 22nd February 2012

This meeting will cover a number of up and coming topics in this rapidly developing field, vital for the care of cardiothoracic surgery patients. It will discuss new anticoagulants, which may well be coming to an anaesthetic room near you soon. There will also be a talk about setting up a service to manage anaemic patients before surgery, which may account for up to 50% of patients before surgery, including the use of new intravenous iron formulations and recombinant erythropoietin. The latest point of care analysers will be reviewed - which machines are useful, when and how to use the results to decide on blood products. The choice between blood products and factor concentrates, which may well replace bags of plasma or cryoprecipitate, will be explored, and the management of coagulation and bleeding during ECMO will also be covered. There will be ample time for discussion with the speakers, who are all well known experts, along with a blood conservation question and answer session at the end of the day.
