CAll for abstracts

All abstracts submitted for presentation at the Annual Congress should be submitted on a standard form (see below). Authors of abstracts should follow the Author Guidelines for the journal Anaesthesia (http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/submit.asp?ref=0003-2409), but with the following additional instructions:

  • Text should be in a fully justified column 8 cm wide and no more than 23 cm high in Times New Roman font at 8-pt size.
  • The following sections should be included for research and audit submissions (those in bold should be headed as such using bold type, the rest without headers): Title, Authors, Institution, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References (maximum three). A single Figure or Table (black & white only) is allowable but must fit into the allotted space.
  • For Case Reports/Case Series the written consent of the patient must have been obtained.  This must be stated on the poster or orally when it is presented. The sections Introduction, Case Report and Discussion should be used.
  • The attached template must be used, following the guidance contained.
  • Failure to follow these requirements may result in abstracts not being accepted and/or not being published (see below).

A submission form must accompany each abstract and should be signed by all the authors. A template form can be downloaded at the bottom of this page and should be adhered to.

A variable number of the best abstracts, as judged at the meeting, will be eligible for publication in Anaesthesia. The abstracts must conform to the journal’s usual ethical, methodological and statistical standards. The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to refuse publication. Prizes will be awarded to the authors of the best free paper in each of the three categories, as judged by a panel of experts, and the authors of the best poster(s).

The closing date for abstract submission is midnight on Friday 29th May 2009. Abstracts should be labelled as “AC-1st author-brief topic” (e.g. “AC-Smith-morphine”) and emailed to secretariat@aagbi.org, with the signed submission form sent by fax to +44 (0)20 7631 4352 or emailed as a scanned image to the same e-mail address. After the deadline, there will be a preliminary review of the abstracts received to determine which ones are to be accepted for presentation at Congress.

Authors of abstracts will be contacted by 24th July to tell them if their abstracts have been accepted. Some authors will be invited to present their work orally, and the remaining successful authors will be invited to present a poster. The PowerPoint presentations for those papers accepted for oral presentation should be emailed to the above address before midnight on Friday 28th August. Oral presentations will be on Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th and Friday 25th September. Seven minutes will be allowed for the presentation, followed by a two minute period for questions. Posters should be up to A1 size (59.4cm x 84cm) and orientated in portrait, not landscape, view. Presenters of posters will be sent further instructions re where to hang them etc, nearer the meeting date.

All presenters must pay for registration at the meeting. Travel and accommodation will not be reimbursed by the Association of Anaesthetists.

Questions about free papers should be directed to secretariat@aagbi.org.

We particularly welcome abstracts from Staff and Associate Specialist Grade doctors.
