Ultrasound
Workshop leader: Dr Diana Mathioudakis
Please note: The duration of each session will be 2 hours.
The practical application of ultrasound technology in routine clinical practice has blossomed in recent years, with the
development of high resolution portable ultrasound machines. In line with the recent NICE guidelines, US machines are
increasingly being used in critical care and routine anaesthetic practise. This workshop will introduce the application
of ultrasound for regional anaesthesia, focusing on upper limb regional anaesthetic blocks. All sonoanatomic teaching
will be perfomed in small groups with individuals scanning life models to ensure a thorough learning experience for
every participant.
Aims:
• Introduction to and practise in basic ultrasound scanning techniques, probe handling and machine setup
• Sonoanatomy of the neck, safe identification of jugular vein including best visualisation for real time 2-dimensional
ultrasound guided central vascular access
• Production of consistent image quality for safe performance of IJV cannulation
• Needling in out-of-plane and in-plane technique including awareness for major pitfalls to achieve safe performance
of basic regional anaesthetic block techniques
• Sonoanatomy of brachial plexus with of interscalene, supraclavicular and axillary part
• Production of consistent image quality for safe performance of interscalenic, supraclavicular and axillary plexus
block
Choosing a workshop group:
Please assess your current standard from the options below. From here you will be able to see which group you should register for.
A = No experience with ultrasound except some vascular access, no course in the past
B = Some experience with ultrasound, some vascular access, vascular access ultrasound course in the past
C = Some experience with ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia, self taught
D = Some experience with ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia, attended a course in the past
A & B should register for Group 1
C & D should register for Group 2
Difficult Airway
Workshop leaders: Dr Ravi Dravid & Dr Alex Marfin
Please note: The duration of each session will be 2 hours.
This newly designed workshop is intended to teach delegates both the technical skills and Human Behaviours/Nontechnical
skills (NOTECHS) for management of a difficult airway. The workshop, invaluable for anaesthetists of all
grades, will give an opportunity to learn and practice many airway techniques including fibreoptic intubation on
models using different airway aids. Skills acquired at the workshop are intended to help delegates in the management
of an anticipated difficult airway, an unanticipated failed intubation and a ‘can’t intubate, can’t ventilate scenario’. It
will also provide the delegates ample opportunities to learn, discuss and practise both the technical skills (based on
DAS guidelines) and simulator based non-technical skills (NOTECHS) by the ‘SMART’ approach.
The workstations will include:
• NOTECHS Training session – “SMART” approach on Simulator
• Fibreoptic endoscopy manipulation skills
• Oral and nasal fibreoptic intubation skills
• Intubation through LMA/ILMA
• Cricothyroidotomy techniques and Transtracheal ventilation
• Tips on successful awake fibreoptic intubation
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPX)
Workshop leaders: Dr Michael Swart & Dr John Carlisle
This workshop is an introduction to cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) and its use
for the preoperative evaluation of patients. We have nine years’ experience of using CPX
testing. This test is now an integral part of our preoperative assessment clinic.
The workshop will compose of:
• An explanation of the equipment
• A live demonstration of a CPX test (volunteers welcome)
• How to interpret the test
• A discussion on the clinical value of the test
We will be happy to tailor this workshop to your needs. If there is any aspect of CPX (theory, practicalities, cases etc)
that you would like discussed please let us know.
Please contact either: Dr Michael Swart (michael.swart@nhs.net) or Dr John Carlisle (john.carlisle@nhs.net).
Please register for the CPX network: http://www.networks.nhs.uk
ACCEA
Workshop leader: Dr Griselda Cooper
This workshop will provide step-by-step advice on the process of application for local and national clinical excellence
awards, with the hope of increasing the likelihood of success in getting an award. Workshop leaders will advise on how
to approach filling in the forms for optimal presentation and go over some of the common pitfalls. The group will work
through examples relating to different job plans and contributions. They will consider the job plan and how to express
the time spent over and above the NHS contract that represents excellence. Practical tips will be in abundance. There
should be an opportunity to provide help and advice if you want to discuss your own form.
The workshop organiser has requested that you bring with you a summary of your own contributions that might cover your submission for ACCEA points according to the five domains
- Delivering a high quality service
- Developing a high quality service
- Managing and leading a high quality service
- Contributing to the NHS through Research and Innovation
- Contributing to the NHS through Teaching and Training
This will enhance the value you will receive from the workshop.
Thoracic Epidural
Workshop leader: Dr Akbar Vohra
This workshop will focus on the practice and management of thoracic epidural anaesthesia. There will be a particular
focus on the use of high thoracic epidural anaesthesia. The workshop will include short presentations, demonstrations
and group discussions.
Participants will have an update on:
• Anatomy of the thoracic spine
• Pharmacology of drug combinations in current use
• Post procedure monitoring
• Minimisation and management of complications
• Teaching methods
There will be a video demonstration of the midline and lateral approaches to the high and mid thoracic segments.
Novel techniques such as the use of high thoracic anaesthesia for abdominal surgery and the use of radiography for the
insertion and management of thoracic epidurals, will be introduced and discussed.
Transthoracic Echocardiography
Workshop leaders: Dr Craig Morris & Dr Conn Russell
Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is a useful new technique for triage, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of
acutely ill patients. Availability of affordable, high specification, portable ultrasound equipment has led to a minor
revolution in the way this technique can be used by appropriately trained clinicians to enhance patient care.
This workshop will provide an introduction to focused transthoracic echocardiography, which could usefully be
incorporated into anaesthetic practice. We will introduce the delegates to the equipment used and the practical
technique involved. After the introduction and demonstration, delegates will be given an opportunity to gain hands-on
experience in scanning healthy volunteers.
This workshop will provide a tempting introduction to this hugely rewarding clinical skill and we hope that the
delegates will take this enthusiasm into training and ultimately use it to benefit their patients.
Both workshop providers have been involved in the development of training and qualification in focused TTE and will
outline the current arrangements for accreditation in this area. If you thought echocardiography was something that
only existed on a request card, come and take a look!
Barema: Improving patient care through new medical devices
Workshop leader: Mr Harrie Cooke
The aim of the workshop is to outline the steps that need to be followed from the identification of a potential new
device, through to marketable product. This will cover topics such as Intellectual Property, EU MDD, International
Standards, Clinical Trials, Manufacturing (including Quality Systems), Marketing & Sales. Participants will hear of real
examples, and have a chance to get an appreciation of what it takes to achieve successful innovation.
