SIGHTSEEING DAY
Wednesday 17 september, Full Day Trip
Steam Trains and River Boats, Shopping and Gardens all in one day! From Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway
Station the day starts with a leisurely journey to Kingswear. The steam train travels along the Torbay coast,
through the wooded slopes approaching the River Dart. Once there a short ferry ride takes you across the river
to Dartmouth where a river boat will take you up the estuary to Greenway. At Greenway you will be taken
on a guided tour of the beautiful Greenway Gardens. Featured on the BBC’s “Hidden Gardens” programme,
Greenway is renowned for rare half-hardy plants underplanted with native wild flowers and has an atmosphere
of wildness and timelessness. Lunch will be served at the gardens and the river boat will take you back to
Dartmouth where you will be given time to take in the town. Ancient narrow streets house boutique shops, art
galleries and delicatessens, enjoy a cream tea with the group before heading back to Torquay.

AGATHA CHRISTIE MILE
Thursday 18 September, 1400–1600
Agatha Christie was born in Barton Road, Torquay on 15 September 1890 and spent much of her life in the area.
Torquay now celebrates an annual “Agatha Christie Festival” on the week of her birthday, and the 2008 festival
will be held from 15–20 September. Why not join us on a tour celebrating Agatha Christie’s life?
The Agatha Christie Mile takes you to some of the places that were inspirational in the life and works of the
great writer. This tour will start at the Museum, where you will be given time to wander round and find out
about Christie and her cnnection to Torquay. Among the places of interest are the Grand Hotel, where Agatha
and Archie Christie spent their honeymoon together, the Torquay Pavillion, and the Agatha Christie bust, which
is the only such bust in the whole world.
