Wednesday 17 September: 1000–1200, 1400 - 1600
Thursday 18 September: 0900 – 1100
Please note: The duration of each session will be 2 hours.
The practical application of ultrasound technology in routine clinical practise has blossomed in recent years,
with the development of high resolution portable ultrasound machines. In line with the recent NICE guidelines,
US machines are increasingly being used in critical care and routine anaesthetic practise. This workshop hopes
to introduce the clinician to uses and application of ultrasound for central venous catheter placement, simple
ITU diagnostics and regional anaesthesia.
Included in the presentation will be:
• Basic physics and principles of ultrasound • Familiarisation with currently available US machines
• Practical demonstration (using models) of techniques • Video presentations of common applications, including central venous access and regional anaesthesia.

DIFFICULT AIRWAYS (DAS) WORKSHOP
Thursday 17 September: 0900 – 1100, 1400 – 1600
Friday 18 September: 0900 – 1100
Please note: The duration of each session will be 2 hours.
This practical workshop, invaluable for both a beginner and an experienced scopist, will give an opportunity
to learn and practice fibreoptic intubation on models using different airway aids. It will include a preamble on
the use of fibreoptic equipment for managing difficult airways. Skills acquired at the workshop are intended
to help delegates in the management of an anticipated difficult airway, an unanticipated failed intubation and
a ‘can’t intubate, can’t ventilate’ scenario. It would also provide delegates ample opportunity to learn and
discuss techniques of sedation, and local anaesthesia of upper airway, essential for successful awake fibreoptic
intubation.
The workstations will include:
• Fibreoptic equipment manipulation skills • Oral and nasal fibreoptic intubation skills
• Dedicated airway aids • Awake fibreoptic intubation technique • Transtracheal ventilation

CARDIOPULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING (CPX) WORKSHOP
Wednesday 17 September: 1015 - 1145, 1400 - 1530
Thursday 18 September: 0930 - 1030, 1400 - 1530
Friday 19 September: 0930 - 1030
Please note: The duration of each session will be 1 hour.
This workshop is an introduction to cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) and its use for the preoperative
evaluation of patients. The workshop leaders have eight years’ experience using CPX testing. This test is now an
integral part of our preoperative assessment clinic.
The workshop will comprise of:
• An explanation of the equipment • A live demonstration of a CPX test (volunteers welcome)
• How to interpret the test • A discussion on the clinical value of the test
Workshops may be tailored to your needs. If there is any aspect of CPX (theory, practicalities, cases etc) that you
would like discussed please contact either:
Dr Michael Swart (michael.swart@nhs.net) or Dr John Carlisle (john.carlisle@nhs.net).

EDUCATION
Thursday 18 September: 0930 - 1030
Dealing with the challenges of teaching and assessing trainees in the operating theatre.
This workshop is aimed at all those who teach one to one in the operating theatre. Teaching and assessing anaesthetic trainees can be frustrating because of the specific challenges that exist simply because the teaching
is based in the operating theatre. We will give practical tips and advice on how to overcome these frustrations and problems. Participants will be invited to use their own experiences so that they can receive specific and practical advice on tackling the issues that they face. No prior educational knowledge will be assumed.

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS (ACCEA) WORKSHOP
Wednesday 17 September: 1400–1530
This workshop will provide step-by-step advice on the process of application for local and national clinical excellence awards, with the hope of increasing your chances of success in getting an award. Workshop leaders will use examples of badly completed forms to emphasise how improvements can be made. They will advise anaesthetists
on how to fill in each table of the form, considering a model job plan and the time spent over and above the NHS contract. Practical tips will be in abundance. There may be an opportunity to provide help and advice if you want to discuss your own form. This workshop will be limited to 5 delegates only. Early booking is advisable.

THORACIC EPIDURAL (TE) WORKSHOP
Wednesday 17 September: 1600–1730
Thursday 18 September: 1400–1530
This workshop will focus on the practice and management of thoracic epidural anaesthesia. There will be a
particular focus on the use of high thoracic epidural anaesthesia. The workshop will include short presentations,
demonstrations and group discussions.
Participants will have an update on:
• Anatomy of the thoracic spine • Pharmacology of drug combinations in current use
• Post procedure monitoring • Minimisation and management of complications • Teaching methods
There will be a video demonstration of the midline and lateral approaches to the high and mid thoracic
segments. Novel techniques such as the use of high thoracic anaesthesia for abdominal surgery and the use of
radiography for the insertion and management of thoracic epidurals will be introduced and discussed.

NEUROMUSCULAR MONITORING WORKSHOP
Supported by

Neuromuscular monitoring to avoid residual curarisation – a hands-on guide.
This hands-on workshop will demonstrate the key principles of neuromuscular monitoring and demonstrate
how “train-of-four” monitoring of neuromuscular blocks helps to ensure complete recovery prior to extubation.
