GAT CARDIFF 2010
30 JUNE - 02 JULY, CITY HALL
It’s the time of year again when thoughts turn longingly towards the summer – long days of warm sunshine, sitting eating lunch outside on the grass, a civilised drink on a waterside terrace. All this, along with an excellent opportunity to learn, can be found at the GAT Annual Scientific Meeting in Cardiff City Hall from Wednesday June 30th to Friday July 2nd 2010.
Our Academic Lead, Professor Judith Hall, and the Chair of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Sarah Harries, have put together a fantastic scientific programme showcasing our local talent here in Cardiff. Highlights include an Airway Management session with our local experts, including the latest airway research –a long tradition within the University Hospital of Wales. The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) are involved with a session on Critical Care Medicine, and they will be there to demonstrate the many facets of their work and what they have to offer us as anaesthetic trainees. The GAT Committee have organised a session on Peri-operative Optimisation which will include talks by well-known speakers Dr Rupert Pearse and Dr David Bennett. Cardiff has an excellent local relationship between the Obstetric and Haematology departments which will be demonstrated in the Obstetric Anaesthesia Session. Eminent speaker Irene Tracy has been secured for the Session on Pain Management and will be speaking about Functional MRI. There are also sessions on Anaesthesia in the Developing World, a subject particularly close to our hearts both in Cardiff and at the AAGBI, and on Pre-hospital medicine including a talk by Professor Keith Porter, Professor of Clinical Traumatology, about the emerging subspecialty of Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine.
Our Workshops are always popular, and this year’s topics will include Paediatric Airways, Cardiac Output Monitoring, New Airway Equipment, Double Lumen Tubes and One Lung Anaesthesia. Remember to book these when you register to ensure you secure a place. This year’s Pinkerton Lecture will be given by Pat Oakley who is very experienced in the world of medical management and politics. As usual, we will be running a Registrar’s Prize Session and a Poster Competition, for further information on how to enter and showcase your hard work at a national meeting, please see the Call for Abstracts section and get yours in early. Anaesthetists in Management will be present to host a lunchtime session and promote their work to us.
This year we will revert to an organised social event on the Wednesday evening in a bar on the waterfront in Cardiff Bay. Thursday evening will see the Annual Dinner taking place in Cardiff City Hall, a well proven venue for formal, black tie events. Both of these provide excellent networking and socialising opportunities.
On-Line booking is now open, so book your study leave and register now for the trainee anaesthetist event of the year.
