WORKSHOPS
This year there will be four workshops running at the meeting:
Places are limited to allow good teaching ratios and so delegates
are advised to book early. There is a booking fee of £20 to secure
a place on these sessions. Each workshop will run four times
during the conference.
Session times are as follows:
Session 1: Wednesday 2 July 1400–1530
Session 2: Wednesday 2 July 1600–1730
Session 3: Thursday 3 July 1130–1300
Session 4: Friday 4 July 0930–1100
Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia
Workshop Organiser: Dr Steve Roberts, Alder Hey
This workshop is an introduction into Ultrasound Guided
Regional Anaesthesia. The recent introduction of hand held
portable ultrasound devices has led to a widespread interest in
applying ultrasound to regional anaesthesia. The advantages
are the identification of individual target nerves, the direct
observation of the needle passing through the tissues and
ultimately the spread of local anaesthetic (LA) around the
target nerve. This leads to much shorter block onset times,
higher success rates and lower volumes of LA required.
The workshop will focus on basic information about
equipment, physics related to ultrasound, probe handling,
image generation and needling techniques. There will be
hands-on scanning practice. Please see www.neuraxiom.com
for further information on ultrasound.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL SESSIONS ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED

Simulation
Workshop Organiser: Dr Arpan Guha, Cheshire and
Merseyside Simulation Centre
This workshop will use a high fidelity simulation environment to
illustrate the importance of non-technical skills in anaesthesia.
While knowledge and skills acquisition form part of every training
programme, there is very little regarding this vital element to our
practice of medicine. A combination of knowledge, technical
skills and non-technical or ‘human factors’ skills is essential to get
through difficult periods of clinical practice.
The workshop will contain presentations, enable discussions
and include your participation in simulated scenarios. Video
debriefing will be used to facilitate discussions at the end of
scenarios.
Please note, this workshop take place at the Chesire & Merseyside Simulation Centre, return transport from the Liner Hotel will be provided.
More information on the Simulation Centre can be found at www.simulationcentre.com
PLEASE NOTE THAT SESSIONS 2 & 3 ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED

CPEX
Workshop Organisers: Dr Neil Agnew and
Dr Les Gemmell, Wrexham
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) exposes patients to a
graduated exercise program, usually on a static cycle. Breath
by breath analysis of oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon
monoxide production during exercise allows examination
of cellular metabolism occurring at the mitochondrial level.
Anaerobic threshold (AT) has been shown to correlate well
with risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. Mortality rates
in elderly patients undergoing major intracavity surgery rise
steeply if the AT is below 11 ml/kg/min. AT has also been used
to triage the need for critical care following surgery. Other
studies have shown that peak VO2 predicts morbidity and
mortality after lung resection surgery and oesophagectomy.
This workshop gives a live demonstration of a CPET with time
for discussion.

Difficult Airway
Workshop Organiser: Dr Peter Charters, Aintree
This workshop will be based on the new ADAM method
for management of the anticipated difficult airway. This is a
tripartite approach based around:
• problem based patient assessment
• selection of the most appropriate “risk contingency plan”
for your patient
• detailed interrogation of this plan to facilitate its
flawless execution
The practical elements of the workshop will be exemplified
by challenging scenarios and advanced airway techniques.
This workshop can be summarised as giving you the tools and
the skills that you always wanted to acquire but have never
been taught. Numbers will be limited to ensure high faculty to
delegate ratios to achieve these ends.
PLEASE NOTE THAT SESSION 3 IS NOW FULLY BOOKED
