Funding for Research

There are a variety of grants and awards that, as a member of the Association of Anaesthetists, you can apply for.

AAGBI research funding (Departmental Project Grants, Research Fellowships and small research grants) is now allocated by the Research Council of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA).

National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia

The establishment of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia was announced in March 2008. Its vision is, with respect to anaesthesia and related specialties, to:

  1. Develop and maximise its academic profile within the healthcare profession, NHS, Universities and major research bodies
  2. Facilitate high profile, influential research
  3. Facilitate and support training and continuing professional education in academia
  4. Improve patient care by promoting the translation of research findings into clinical practice

The research agenda is governed by the Institute’s Research Council. The initial funding partners of the Research Council are the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and the journals British Journal of Anaesthesia and Anaesthesia.
