The International Relations Committee

The International Relations Committee (IRC) promotes education, research and safety in international anaesthesia.

The aims of the IRC are to:

  1. Support anaesthetists who train, work or undertake research in low- and middle-income countries.
  2. Distribute educational materials and develop high-quality anaesthesia training courses.
  3. Promote access to safe surgery and anaesthesia as a public health priority.

In December 2007, the AAGBI supported a supplement to the journal AnaesthesiaAnaesthesia in Developing Countries’ as a contribution to the Council of Science Editors Global Theme Issue on Poverty and Human Development.

The IRC offers travel grants to AAGBI members who are seeking funding to work or to deliver educational training courses or conferences in low- and middle-income countries. Please note that grants will not normally be considered for attendance at congresses or meetings of learned societies. Exceptionally they may be granted for extension of travel in association with such a post or meeting. Applicants should indicate their level of experience and expected benefits to be gained from their visits, over and above the educational value to the applicants themselves.

There is no closing date; applications are assessed every few months. Please contact Vivienne Stevens at the AAGBI on secretariat@aagbi.org or 020 7631 8807 for further details of when the next IRC meeting for assessment will be.

The Overseas Anaesthesia Fund (OAF) is an anaesthesia charity that was established in 2006 to promote tax efficient contributions to the international activity of the AAGBI. Major projects include a book donation programme, support for anaesthesia fellows in Uganda, and a global pulse oximetry project, Lifebox. Interested in making a donation to OAF? Click here »
