Anaesthetists to cycle 220 miles from London to Liverpool to improve patient safety in Africa

On Saturday 23 September 2017, a group of 24 anaesthetist doctors and friends will cycle from central London to Liverpool. The aim of their 220-mile three-day cycle ride SAFE Africa Cycle, is to raise sponsorship money for SAFE Africa, a two-year fundraising campaign – organised by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) – to raise £100,000 to improve anaesthesia education and care in Africa by increasing the delivery of SAFE (Safer Anaesthesia from Education) medical training in the delivery of anaesthesia for women and children, improving surgical safety in these important groups of patients.

Anaesthesia-related deaths are extremely rare in the UK and other high-income countries. This is not the case in many developing countries where the death rate due to anaesthesia remains high, up to 1 in 150 in some areas. In parts of Africa the number of trained anaesthetic providers is as low as 0.18 per 100,000 population, compared with the UK where there are 18 trained anaesthetists per 100,000 population. SAFE courses are vital in these countries, where anaesthetic providers often work under challenging conditions with little or no opportunity to update their knowledge and skills.

The President of the AAGBI Dr Paul Clyburn, who is also taking part in the SAFE Africa Cycle, said “The SAFE courses project supports sustainable education provision for local anaesthetists, by local anaesthetists. The money raised through the SAFE Africa campaign will help to improve the safety of thousands of patients in Africa. As AAGBI President, Consultant Anaesthetist, and a keen cyclist, I hope that our London to Liverpool SAFE Africa Cycle will raise a significant amount of money to improve obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia training in Africa.”
