Less Than Full Time (LTFT) Training
If you are thinking about training less than full time (LTFT) it is likely that you have other commitments or areas of your life which you need to devote time to, whilst also trying to get the most out of your training. Anaesthesia has a long tradition of supporting doctors who wish to train LTFT and of all hospital specialities is second only to paediatrics for numbers of part-time trainees. LTFT training programmes in anaesthesia are usually well organised and most departments will have had experience of LTFT trainees.
Despite the support available the logistics of training part-time can be confusing. The A to Z Guide to LTFT Training in Anaesthesia has been adapted from one originally written for trainees in the Northern Deanery. It collates information from lots of sources such as GAT, the AABGI, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the British Medical Association and NHS Employers, including links to relevant publications. In addition there is some advice regarding the practical aspects of organising part time training.
The Human Resources policies for LTFT training may vary between Deaneries and employers so it is important that you check the correct local procedures to follow. Most Schools of Anaesthesia will have a Flexible Training Advisor who can help you with this, whilst established LTFT trainees can be a wealth of information. You can also contact the GAT Committee with any queries regarding LTFT training, which we will endeavour to answer. Good Luck.
