Summary

The widespread introduction of ultrasound has brought with it many concerns relating to competency and training. With the greater availability of machines and an increasing number of clinical indications there’s a requirement for employing hospitals to ensure clinicians are competent in the use of any equipment used by an employee. Ultrasound has a distinct learning curve and trainee usage is characterised by common novice behaviour and mistakes.

This document presents a set of broad guidelines for current trainees and those who completed their formal training programmes before the introduction of ultrasound. It includes information on:
