Rare or very rare complications

The following side effects are very rare after an anaesthetic; about 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 patients may experience these side effects.

RA = This may occur with a regional anaesthetic.
GA = This may occur with a general anaesthetic

RA GA Serious allergy to drugs
RA GA Nerve damage
RA GA Death
RA GA Equipment failure

Deaths caused by anaesthesia are very rare. There are probably about five deaths for every million anaesthetics in the UK.
