NCEPOD report on perioperative diabetes

The Association of Anaesthetists is pleased to see the release of a report from NCEPOD: ‘Highs and Lows. A review of the quality of care provided to patients over the age of 16 who had diabetes and underwent a surgical procedure’ (http://www.ncepod.org.uk/2018pd.html).

The Association produced guidelines on care for such patients in 2015, and in the light of on-going national audits showing that the quality of care of these patients remains variable, the NCEPOD study is timely. We support the key recommendations, in particular the call for a multi-disciplinary approach to providing care, better referral processes with provision of all relevant information, and the appointment of clinical leads for perioperative diabetes care in each hospital.
