Safety alert - Confirming removal or flushing of lines and cannulae after procedures

The AAGBI wishes to bring this safety alert to the attention of its members.

All intravenous cannulae should either be flushed or removed before patients are transferred from the operating room to the recovery area or from the recovery area to the ward. Verbal and written confirmation of this action should be relayed to staff caring for the patient. We recommend anaesthetic departments consider adding a section to the surgical safety checklist and/or the anaesthetic chart for this to be documented.
